We have a lot of work cut out for us in the days ahead – updating the blog, website, and just plain relaxing with family. This month has been a crazy one in so many ways. We are looking forward to some downtime with the kids before life commands us to get back to normal in January. Until then….

Happy Mother’s Day!

Chris asked me what I wanted for Mother’s Day. While I could think of a list of things that would be great (like a ceiling fan in the family room, maybe replacing the windows with the fake stained glass roses left by the previous owners YUCK!!!, or maybe a fresh coat of paint in our atrium…), it occurred to me that what I mostly want is to know that I am doing a good job with these two crazy kids! I mean, I have piles of laundry to fold, I’m almost out of milk, and I have no idea what we are going to have for dinner. There is a thick layer of dust on the bookshelf and I don’t even want to talk about the bathrooms. Can you relate to that? I bet you can.

I think it’s hard to know about mothering because being a mother is about so much more than the duties of running a home – whether you work outside or strictly inside of it. It’s so much easier to measure being a good housewife. It’s much harder to measure being a good mother. Being a mother is about the intangible things – and because of that, it’s really hard to know if you are making the grade.I would say that being a mother is about creating a safe place for your children to run to when they are scared. It’s about teaching them that they are loved unconditionally. It’s about fostering laughter and joy – even if the living room doesn’t get dusted again this week. It’s about playing with the hose, even if everything gets full of mud, it’s about tomato gardens and planting sunflower seeds, and it’s about princess tea parties. It’s about setting good boundaries and holding them accountable to high expectations.

The only way I’ve found to measure those things is through pictures. When I’m frustrated or lacking confidence, I take out my camera and snap a few frames of the kids. That way, I have something to look at, something I can use to step back and see the my children for who they are. I end up with evidence that I am doing a good job.

This year, I compiled some of my favorite mother-child images to share with you and made it into a slideshow. It makes me cry and they aren’t even images of my children!!! If you’re an RSS subscriber, you may need to go to our blog to see the show.

I bet that you could use some updated images with your little (or not so little) ones. I’d love to set up a session to capture you with them. Consider it an opportunity to acquire some tangible evidence that you are doing a great job. Easter 08

This year I decided that celebrating Easter would be, for me, a lot like celebrating the New Year. While Chris and I made some great resolutions to work toward completing in 2008, I thought that this would be a good time of year to review and amend :-). So, as a means of celebrating Easter, I revisited and re-prioritized my resolutions. As a result of this process, I decided that the most important thing for me to do each day was to make sure I have my devotion/quiet time. I’m a little embarrassed that this isn’t a part of my daily routine…seems so simple, huh….but now I’m resolved that it will be. So, yesterday was my first day dedicated to this task. I know you won’t be surprised to hear that when I read in 1 Timothy, this was the message: ”…train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” I think that’s pretty applicable to my life right now. Funny how these things work, isn’t it . Now, my resolution is to train for godliness, and stand back and watch how God will use that to grow our business. We really enjoyed Easter, and I wanted to share some images with you. But first, one more story: I was walking from church to pick up Lucy at Sunday school and found myself thinking, “I hope somebody comments on her super cute Easter dress my mom made for her.” (I know…pretty shallow!) But when I got there, the teacher pulled me in and said, “Lucy did such a good job at circle time. When we asked the kids what Easter was all about she just looked at us and said, ‘Jesus’”!!!
That’s way better than a comment on her super cute dress!

Some Holiday Favorites

Even though it is the end of January, Lucy is still wishing that we had a Christmas tree and could go “Christmas Light Hunting” at night! It seems like the holidays really just flew right on by. I think Lucy might be onto something here…maybe we could have a month of just the holdiay decorations, music, and fun after the hustle and butle of the gift giving part of the season has passed. Wouldn’t it be great to just enjoy the magic of the season?

In my best attempt to do just that, I thought I would go back and post some of the family session I had the priviledge of doing over the holidays, but didn’t have a chance to add to the blog. So….meet the Rose family and there darling twins!!!

Leah – your family is beautiful! I’m so glad got to work with you!

Trick-or-Treat!

What do you get when you take a clown, a tiger, a sweet pea, and Pochantas out trick-or-treating?

LOTS OF CANDY!

Oh did we have fun! We got together with our friends – Mike and Patti – (they are the ones who just had the twins) so our little ones could experience the fun of Halloween together. It was great. Not only did the girls have a blast, we did as well. Watching them trick-or-treat was more fun than actually doing it and being with a family who is so into kids and loves them SO much was great therapy to our sleep-deprived souls .

Check out this costume – it was the best we saw (and this kid was a total ham). The kids weren’t so sure about the “scary stuff” but they hung in there.

And then, after all the fun, it was sleepy time. And boy were we tired!

We had so much fun!!! Thanks Sweeney family! What a great night of friends, costumes, and candy!!
